I like to stay on top of things so that nothing slips through the cracks. Sometimes it is harder than I have imagined and other times I have sailed through it seamlessly even though I had anticipated trouble.
What I know to be true is that I function well when things around me are organized like my desk, my laptop, my cupboard, the kitchen. You get the jest right?! I also know that when I get stressed, I feel the urge to clean and organize things around me. You may psycho-analyze these things, but you have to agree that when things are organized it just helps save time and gives you the peace of mind needed.
Here are my top 3 things I do to keep my sanity and stay on top of my work.
1. Get that To-Do list sorted.
I like to make my to-do list in three phases:
- Brain-dump phase where I list everything that I need to be done. Everything means EVERYTHING. Can I add this research data to my presentation? It goes on the list. I can cite Elizabeth Gilbert in that article. Goes on the list. Do I need to do laundry today? That goes on my list too.
- Sort them in the order they need to be done.
- Use a sticky note and write only three things (from your brain-dump list) at a time. Check them off and put the next three and so on.
2. Prepare in advance.
Identify things that need planning and are repetitive. Like meals. Prepare your menu at the beginning of the week. Even if you don’t stick to it 100%, it’s less stressful. I like to pack tiffin snacks on Sunday evening. Five boxes of dry fruits, five boxes of salad, five bottles of juice. Even though it takes up a chunk of my time on the weekend, my weekdays are smooth. This way I make sure I don’t skip or forget anything. PEACE OF MIND!!!
3. Automate and schedule.
Use that calendar on your phone to its fullest capacity. Schedule items that you need to do daily, weekly, monthly, yearly. It takes the pressure off when you don’t have to keep track of things constantly and when they need to be done.
Automate your bill payments. Not only do you save time but you also avoid any late fee, thus saving money. In your work find activities that can be automated, like emails or spreadsheet reports.
So there you go. My top three tips to keep you organized and keep your peace of mind.
